CURLY: Custer’s Crow Scout

Curly was a handsome 17-year-old when he witnessed the fall of Custer at the Little Bighorn. As a scout for Custer, he was in close proximity to the fighting but was not engaged in it. Although he was one of the first to report what happened, he spoke no English and communicated what he saw in sign language. When word quickly spread that Curly was the “only survivor” of the battle, he became famous and his photograph was in demand. He lived until 1923, always denying that he was in the fight itself. This photograph is one of the earliest of Curly, taken shortly after the battle by D.F. Barry in Bismark, Dakota Territory.
Toward the end of his life, the famous scout was witness to a time of great change on the northern plains, as well as in America. Curly and the Crows who had once roamed the northern plains freely were now essentially prisoners on their reservation.
The famous scout Shi-Shia (Curly) died on May 22, 1923 and received a soldier’s funeral. He is resting in Custer National Cemetery, located on the same battlefield. He will always be known as the sole survivor of Custer’s command, and his name will be forever linked with that of Son of the Morning Star.

Ο Curly  ήταν ένας όμορφος 17χρονος όταν είδε το τέλος του Κάστερ στη μάχη του Little Big Horn. Ως ανιχνευτής του Custer, ήταν πολύ κοντά στις μάχες, αλλά δεν συνεπλάκη ποτέ. Θα είναι πάντοτε γνωστός ως ο μοναδικός επιζών υπο τας διαταγάς του Custer και το όνομά του θα συνδέεται για πάντα με αυτό του Υιού του πρωινού αστεριού.
