Fast-drawing gunslinger,a cowboy, a gambler and also said to have traded whiskey with Indians around Camp Robinson, Nebraska during his teens.. Luke Short was born in Mississippi in 1854 but was raised in Texas. . He also later invested in various saloons. Short had practiced with a gun in his early years and would acquire a reputation for his skill, but the most famous event he was involved in was probably the so-called Dodge City War.
Gunfight with Charlie Storms.
Storms did not know Short and, like the bad man in Leadville, had sized him up as an insignificant-looking fellow, whom he could slap in the face without expecting a return.
Charlie Storms took hold of Luke's arm and pulled him off the sidewalk, where he had been standing, at the same time pulling his pistol, a Colt's 45 calibre, but like the Leadvillian, he was too slow, although he succeeded in getting his pistol out. Luke Short is also famous for winning a duel against Jim Courtright on February 8, 1887 in Forth Worth, Texas.
Courtright famous gunman ,had already opened a private dedective office with the purpose to legalise "protection" in various saloons.
He asked from Luke money for protection for his White Elephant saloon and this ended in a duel.
Jim draw first but Luke send him already 3-4 buletts that sent him dead on the ground.
In 1893, he became desperately sick from an unknown illness and died in bed at the age of 39.
