Sam Bass was born on July 21, 1851, in Mitchell, Indiana.  Sam Bass started out an honest man. He had a simple and modest dream of moving to Texas and becoming a cowboy. He was hired as a deputy by a Sheriff W.F. Eagan, but preferred horse racing. In 1876, with two associates, Bass drove some cattle from Texas to Kansas but took off with the money instead of giving it to the cattle owner he joined a group of outlaws and began robbing stagecoaches.  After several such robberies, Bass and his gang decided to rob the Union Pacific gold train from San Francisco, collecting more than $60,000. It is still the largest robbery of any train on the Union Pacific Railroad.  He was pursued by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency and the Texas Rangers.

After one of the gang turned informant(Jim Murphy), Bass and his men were ambushed by Texas Ranger Sergeant Richard Ware and Ranger George Herold in Round Rock, Texas, where the gang attempted to rob the Williamson County Bank.  Bass killed Williamson County Deputy Sheriff A. W. Grimes.  Bass himself was shot, but he escaped and was found lying in a field west of Round Rock.  He died the next day.  He was buried in Round Rock Cemetery, and the road to the cemetery was later named Sam Bass Road.

Ο Sam Bass γεννήθηκε στις 21 Ιουλίου 1851 στο Mitchell της Ιντιάνα. Ο Sam Bass ξεκίνησε σαν ένας έντιμος άνθρωπος. Είχε ένα απλό και μετριοπαθές όνειρο να ταξιδέψει στο Τέξας και να γίνει καουμπόης. Μισθώθηκε ως βοηθός από τον Σερίφη W.F. Eagan, αλλά αυτός προτιμούσε τις  ιπποδρομίες. Θεωρείται ακόμα, η μεγαλύτερη ληστεία  τρένου της Union Pacific Railroad. Καταδιώχθηκε απο την Εθνική  Υπηρεσία Ντετέκτιβ, Pinkerton και τους Texas Rangers.

Μετά απο πληροφορία απο ένα μελος της συμμορίας (τον Jim Murphy),Ο Bass και οι άντρες του έπεσαν σε ενέδρα  από τον Texas Ranger,  Richard Ware και Ranger George Herold στο Round Rock του Τέξας, όπου η συμμορία προσπάθησε να ληστέψει την Williamson County Bank. Ο Bass σκότωσε τον βοηθό Σερίφη του Williamson County Α. W. Grimes. Ο ίδιος ο Bass πυροβολήθηκε, αλλά δραπέτευσε και βρέθηκε ξαπλωμένος σε ένα χωράφι  δυτικά του Round Rock. Πέθανε την επόμενη μέρα. Θάφτηκε στο νεκροταφείο Round Rock, και ο δρόμος προς το νεκροταφείο αργότερα ονομάστηκε Sam Bass Road.
